Born of the Ocean – Salt Shop

Living on an island & being surrounded by the ocean can influence everything you do.

This is certainly true when you step inside Salt, a beautiful shop at the Fort Commons on Fort Street. Salt is a lifestyle brand, made and designed in Canada. Lucky for Victorians, the shop, originally from Saltspring, now has a second location on Vancouver island. Central to the brand is the idea of “slow fashion” with basic, comfy clothing made of long lasting fibres like organic cotton, hemp, linen and bamboo. The aim here is to lessen the impact fast fashion has on the environment specifically our oceans.

Another focus of Salt is building community and connection. They do so with a series of unique events from music in the courtyard behind the shop, to social mixers and pop-ups, to classes in store (not during Covid though) and even a clothing swap.

The coolest thing however about this great spot is the lady who runs the place. Founder, head designer and main shopkeep Jessica Wilson, or Jessie, is a true islander; welcoming, friendly and passionate about the people in her community. She’s also is refurbishing an old fishing vessel from the forties into a beautiful floating getaway. You can follow along with the makeover journey of Tralee,…that’s the boat’s name, on her Instagram feed. It really is fascinating and easy to see why life of the water is such a large and important part of this local business.
